Melanie had a strong desire to do more in the teaching profession, but wasn’t sure what or how. She began to think of ways that she could utilize her strong creativity and her love of helping others, while also fulfilling the need of wanting to do more with her career. Although Melanie was a teacher by day, she was also a self-taught decorator in her spare time. She had experience decorating and staging homes before she became a teacher and had the natural ability to transform an empty space into a fabulous showplace! Melanie’s passion for decorating and design transferred to her own classroom where she created functional yet amazing classroom environments for students to flourish in year after year.
Melanie believed a classroom decorating website was needed for teachers. She knew that teachers had the overwhelming task of decorating their own classroom every school year. With so much emphasis on curriculum, creating a warm and inviting environment for students could be a daunting task for most teachers. Feeling the need to share her ideas and passion with teachers, Schoolgirl Style was born. Simplifying the entire decorating process, Melanie began designing her own coordinated décor and staging model classrooms to take the “guess work” out of classroom decorating. Melanie is currently living her dream of inspiring and helping teachers all over the world!
Schoolgirl Style was voted “Best New Blog” by Really Good Stuff and Melanie’s work has been featured on numerous websites. In addition, she has styled several classrooms that were featured in the Creative Teaching Press catalogs. During the 2012 – 2013 school year, Melanie worked as the Creative Consultant for Creative Teaching Press and traveled all over the country hosting teacher workshops, decorating classrooms, and helping teachers solve their decorating dilemmas.
Melanie is married to Matt (who happens to be a teacher as well) and is a busy mother to three children. She loves the color pink, ruffles, glitter, sparkly jewelry, beauty products, holidays, Saturdays, and Target. Melanie enjoys going for long drives with a Diet Coke by her side, “thinking time,” walking, and sleeping in (although this rarely happens).
Melanie graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Elementary Education and an Early Childhood Endorsement. She earned her Masters degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. With ambitions of becoming a school principal, Melanie graduated from Oakland University with an Education Specialist degree in School Administration specializing in school reform, finance, and policy. Melanie taught for 14 years in grades Kindergarten, 1st, and 4th.
After graduating from Kettering with a degree in engineering, Lisa decided to put her degree to good use by working at the GAP as a part time sales associate. Go figure. Now a substitute teacher, she is the mother of two great kids – Connor (18), and Sydney (15), and the wife of her college sweetheart – Mike, who, by the way, is still an engineer! When not keeping up with all the Real Housewives, Lisa enjoys playing Words With Friends, exercising, and spending time with the love of her life – her little dog, Truffle.
