Melanie had a strong desire to do more in the teaching profession, but wasn’t sure what or how. She began to think of ways that she could utilize her strong creativity and her love of helping others, while also fulfilling the need of wanting to do more with her career. Although Melanie was a teacher by day, she was also a self-taught decorator in her spare time. She had experience decorating and staging homes before she became a teacher and had the natural ability to transform an empty space into a fabulous showplace! Melanie’s passion for decorating and design transferred to her own classroom where she created dreamy classroom environments for students year after year.
Melanie believed a classroom decorating website was needed for teachers. She knew that teachers had the overwhelming task of decorating their own classroom every school year. With so much emphasis on curriculum, creating a warm and inviting environment for students could be a daunting task for most teachers. Melanie decided to design her own coordinated classroom decor and photograph mock classrooms that teachers could use as inspiration! Her blog would take the guess work out of classroom decorating and make teacher’s lives so much easier! Preparing a beautiful classroom would now be a cinch with her colorful photos and coordinated decor and accessories! Melanie would use her talents to create classroom themes that were trendy and stylish, as well as design her own coordinated tags, nameplates, and banners to give classrooms a designer and cohesive look. This seemed to balance Melanie’s two loves; teaching and decorating, hence the creation of Schoolgirl Style! The Story of Schoolgirl Style…

Personal Assistant to Melanie
Kandin is currently a junior at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI where she lives during the school year. After studying abroad in northern Spain in spring 2012, she decided to major in Spanish and tag on a Linguistics major for good measure. Her passions include learning, languages, women’s studies, fashion, philosophy, and music. When not writing long, philosophical papers about life at college, she enjoys reading, flipping through the pages of Vogue, pinning excessively on Pinterest, listening to French indie music, watching foreign films, talking, not doing school work, and wondering what will happen after college. Kandin’s favorite thing about working at Schoolgirl Style is getting to look at beautiful things and work with the wonderful, kind, and generous Melanie.
