This is a very different classroom tour today!  We are visiting three classrooms…all belong to Life Skills teacher, Allison Travis.  Can you imagine having to decorate THREE classrooms?!?  Allison teaches a special needs program for students with significant cognitive disabilities.  She works on academics, but also independent living skills, daily living activities, and social skills.  Her district has given her three classrooms to develop the ideas she has for this educational program.

The Main Classroom

This is Allison’s main classroom.  She spends the majority of her student’s academic time in this room.  I love how she chose soothing blues and greens to decorate this space.

Take a look…

The Kitchen/Laundry Room
This room is attached to the previous one.  They learn how to cook, clean, do dishes and laundry, sweep, etc. here.  They start off each morning having breakfast together and talking about the previous day.  It’s family time and Allison’s favorite time of the day.

The Centers Room
This room is located across the hall.  It is designed into stations where students rotate every 15 minutes when a bell sounds.  They follow their personal schedules and rotate independently.  This room is where Allison can really focus on their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives.  Each center has a ‘board” that tells them what they do on each day of the week.  There is a hanging box for them to stick their velcro “tickets” on when they arrive at the center and then they place their schedule folder into the the box while they work.

I am so impressed with the overall concept of this program!  You can see Allison’s love and dedication to her student’s by the three spaces she created for them.  Each room is an attractive, organized space that is conducive to teaching and learning.

Well done, Allison!
